Why Drying Matters in Fertilizer Production: Common Mistakes to Avoid

Image
In modern fertilizer granulation, producers often focus most of their attention on the granulator, the mixer, or the curing stage.  The dryer, however, is the step most frequently under-sized, overloaded, or simply set and forgotten.  Yet it is the drying stage that ultimately decides whether granules stay hard and free-flowing in the bag or fuse into caked lumps before the customer ever opens it. Understanding why drying matters — and where it typically goes wrong — helps manufacturers protect quality, cut fuel cost, and avoid unnecessary downtime. Why the Drying Stage Is Easy to Overlook At its core, drying seems straightforward: wet granules go in, dry granules come out.  But in practice, the dryer interacts with nearly every upstream and downstream stage.  It receives hot, soft granules from the granulator, must reduce moisture to a tight target range, and hands a stable, cool product to the screener and coater.  If any parameter drifts — temperature, resid...
